America’s first commercial-scale offshore wind farm is now complete and delivering power to the grid.

Leaders, including NY Governor Hochul and Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm gathered on March 14th to celebrate the completion of the 12-turbine South Fork Wind farm,  located 35 miles east of Montauk Point. The project is expected to produce enough electricity to power 70,000 homes on Long Island and the Rockaways.

“With this offshore wind farm delivering power, New York is on the board, said Johanna Neumann, senior director of the campaign for 100% Renewable Energy at Environment America Research & Policy Center. “This project makes it easier for other projects to follow in its wake and help New York and the region reach its offshore wind potential.”

The Atlantic region, especially the Northeast, has strong, consistent wind and a wide, shallow continental shelf, making deployment of offshore wind relatively straightforward using existing technology.
