Nuclear reactors still expensive, slow and risky

A new report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis found that small modular reactors (SMRs) are still expensive, too slow to build, and too risky to play a significant role in transitioning from fossil fuels in the coming 10-15 years.

Citing rising cost estimates and construction delays, the report finds that investment in SMRs will take resources away from carbon-free and lower-cost renewable technologies that are available today and can push the transition from fossil fuels forward significantly in the coming decade.

“America’s renewable energy resources are abundant, pollution-free and cheaper and faster to convert into electricity than ever before,” said Johanna Neumann, Senior Director of the Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy at Environment America Research & Policy Center. “Instead of propping up expensive, slow and risky technologies, regulators, utilities, investors and government officials should embrace the reality that renewables are the best solution to America’s challenges, and lean into rapid deployment of wind and solar.”
