New report: New Jersey among national leaders in EV sales and solar energy

In 2020, America produced almost four times as much renewable electricity from the sun and the wind as in 2011, according to a new report from Environment New Jersey Research & Policy Center and Frontier Group. Renewables on the Rise 2021: The rapid growth of renewables, electric vehicles and other building blocks of a clean energy future finds that if U.S. wind, solar and geothermal power continue to grow at the same 15% annual rate, renewables could meet the nation’s current electricity needs by 2035.

Thousands urge EPA to protect waterways from pollution

Nearly 30,000 people are urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to end the dumping of PFAS chemicals, and thousands more are telling the agency to dramatically reduce pollution from slaughterhouses. Environment America Research & Policy Center and U.S. PIRG Education Fund submitted comments from these individuals to the EPA Thursday as the agency considers updating pollution control standards, which is required by the Clean Water Act.  The groups are also calling on the EPA to strengthen standards for other industrial sources -- including power plants and refineries.

New Trouble in the Air report shows NJ metro regions average 46 days of unhealthy air in 2020

The six metropolitan regions of the state, stretching from Atlantic City to Jersey City,   suffered through an average of 46 days of elevated air pollution in 2020, according to a new report from Environment New Jersey Research & Policy Center, Frontier Group and the NJPIRG Law & Policy Center. EPA monitoring data from 2020 represent the most recent data available from an array of air monitors across the state. Air pollution increases the risk of premature death, asthma attacks, cancer and other adverse health impacts even at moderate levels and air pollution is directly linked to 17,646 deaths every year in New Jersey.

Watershed victory to put the PennEast gas pipeline on ice

PennEast Pipeline Co. announced on Monday that it was pulling the plug on its proposed 116-mile gas pipeline that would have crossed Pennsylvania and New Jersey to deliver methane gas from Pennsylvania fracking wells. The announcement came on the heels of a Supreme Court decision that granted PennEast the right to use eminent domain to seize public and private lands for the pipeline. Nevertheless, the proposal faced  stiff environmental permitting challenges from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) under the Clean Water Act. The company cited environmental permitting difficulties in its decision to withdraw the project.

With Offshore Wind Port Groundbreaking, Supply Chain Will Allow NJ To Meet Its Clean, Renewable Energy Mandate

On the banks of the Delaware Bay Shore, Governor Phil Murphy with Senate President Steve Sweeney and the U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh and a bevy of state leaders broke ground for the New Jersey Wind Port, which will serve as a marshalling headquarters for the offshore wind supply chain. The industrial facility will be constructed on site and will serve as a hub for the offshore wind turbines to be constructed off Atlantic City and the Jersey Shore.

Beach Report Shows Bay Beaches Most Impacted by Bacteria Pollution

With summer in full heat wave mode, water pollution can close New Jersey beaches or put swimmers’ health at risk. In 2020, bacteria levels at New Jersey beaches indicated that water was potentially unsafe for swimming on at least 35 days, according to a new report Safe for Swimming? by Environment New Jersey Research & Policy Center. The report comes as Congress is set to vote today on a set of initiatives on water infrastructure that directly impact run-off and sewage pollution.
