Producer Responsibility bill heads to Senate Floor
On Wednesday, the Maryland State Senate's Education, Energy, and Environment Committee voted to support SB222 to reduce packaging waste and hold producers responsible for the waste they create.
Environment Maryland has been knocking on doors since January 1st to talk to Marylanders about plastic waste, having nearly 5,000 conversations and collecting letters of support. I wanted to share some of their experiences.
The bill (HB284/SB222) is sponsored by Senator Malcolm Augustine in the State Senate and Delegate Sara Love. in the House of Delegates.
Our report “Break the Waste Cycle” details how producer responsibility has proven to be an effective approach to reducing waste and improving recycling.
Next, the bill will be up for a vote before the full Maryland State Senate.
